Hiring movers vs renting a truck

The rental quote is real, but it is not the whole cost. What each option actually involves, and when doing it yourself genuinely wins.

Short answer: Renting a truck is usually cheaper in cash for small, short, ground-floor moves where you have real help. Hiring movers is usually cheaper in total once you count fuel, equipment, insurance, two days of your time, and the risk of damage or injury — and the gap widens with stairs, distance and the number of heavy items.

Full-service vs labour-only

There is a middle option between doing it all yourself and handing over the whole move. How to tell which one your move needs.

Short answer: Full service suits moves where the day is long, the items are valuable or awkward, or you simply do not have two days to give it. Labour-only suits moves where you already have the truck or a portable container, you are driving it yourself, and what you actually need is the lifting done properly.

Checklist

Moving checklist

Week by week, from eight weeks out to the day after. Ordered by when things actually become urgent.

Short answer: Book the mover six to eight weeks ahead, deal with utilities and address changes at the four-week mark, pack room by room from three weeks out, and keep one box and one bag of essentials with you rather than on the truck.
